How the Paver Sand Calculator works

Paver bedding sand is a thin leveling layer placed above the compacted base. Because the layer is shallow, small depth changes can noticeably affect bag count over a large patio. This calculator converts the planned layer into cubic feet, cubic yards and whole bags.

Formula

Sand volume = area × depth × waste factor. Bags = cubic feet ÷ bag yield, rounded up.

Measure before you buy

Use the finished paver area and the intended uncompacted or screeded sand thickness from the installation specification. Enter the cubic-foot yield printed on the bag you plan to buy when using bagged material.

  • Do not confuse bedding sand with polymeric joint sand.
  • Base aggregate is a separate, much thicker layer.
  • Use the manufacturer or project specification for layer thickness.
