Planning estimate only. Actual quantities vary with cuts, layout, site conditions and product specifications.
💡Tip:

Order by the manufacturer pallet or layer quantities when applicable rather than relying only on individual count.

How the Paver Calculator works

The paver calculator estimates individual piece count for one paver size over a rectangular project area. It adds an allowance for border cuts, breakage and pieces that cannot be reused. Multi-size patterns need a pattern-specific breakdown rather than one uniform paver size.

Formula

Paver count = project area with waste ÷ area of one paver. Paver dimensions are converted from inches to feet.

Measure before you buy

Measure the finished paved dimensions inside edging or borders. If a contrasting border uses a different paver, calculate the center field and border separately. Curved walks and fan patterns generally create more cuts than straight rectangular patios.

  • Order by the manufacturer pallet or layer quantities when applicable rather than relying only on individual count.
  • Base gravel and bedding sand are not included in the paver result.
  • Keep spare matching pavers for future repair or utility work.

Common questions

How much paver waste should I allow?

About 5–10% can work for simple rectangles; curves, diagonals and complex patterns may require more.

Does this include joint spacing?

The estimate uses nominal paver dimensions and does not model every joint individually.

Can I calculate a border separately?

Yes. Calculate the field and border as separate areas when they use different units.

Does the result include base material?

No. Gravel base and bedding sand need separate volume calculations.

Should I buy by piece or pallet?

Use the result to determine coverage, then compare it with the pallet or layer coverage sold by your supplier.

Worked example: Paver Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Project length (ft) = 18, Project width (ft) = 12, Paver width (in) = 6, Paver length (in) = 9, Waste allowance (%) = 10 — the result is 634 pavers. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Area with waste: 237.6 sq ft; Net project area: 216 sq ft. Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this paver calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are project length, project width and paver width. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.
