💡Tip:

Measure curves along the actual border line with a flexible tape or string rather than using the straight-line distance between endpoints.

How the Landscape Edging Calculator works

Landscape edging is sold by linear length, so a good estimate starts with the path the edging will actually follow. This calculator subtracts any intentional openings, adds a user-controlled allowance and converts the result into rolls or stock pieces.

Formula

Net edging length = measured border − openings. Purchase length = net length × waste factor. Pieces = purchase length ÷ stock length.

Measure before you buy

For straight beds, sum each segment. For curves, lay a rope or flexible tape along the intended edge and measure that length. Exclude gates, paved transitions or areas where no edging will be installed. Then enter the length of the actual product roll or piece.

  • Curved beds often need more length than a plan-view width suggests.
  • Include overlap or connector requirements in the waste allowance.
  • Spikes, stakes and connectors are separate unless your product package includes them.

Common questions

How do I measure curved landscape edging?

Follow the curve with string or a flexible tape, then measure the string.

How much extra edging should I buy?

About 5–10% is often enough for simple layouts; tight curves and many joints may need more.

Does this calculate edging stakes?

No. Stake spacing depends on the edging system and soil conditions.

Can I use this for metal edging?

Yes. Enter the stock length of the metal sections you plan to buy.

Should I subtract walkway openings?

Yes if no edging will be installed across those openings.

Worked example: Landscape Edging Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Measured border length (ft) = 85, Openings to exclude (ft) = 5, Edging piece/roll length (ft) = 20, Waste allowance (%) = 10 — the result is 88 linear ft. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Net border: 80 ft; Pieces / rolls: 5. Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this landscape edging calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are measured border length, openings to exclude and edging piece/roll length. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.

How to get a more reliable landscape edging estimate

A useful landscape edging estimate begins with dimensions taken from the actual project. Small measurement errors can become significant when they are repeated across many boards, joints, courses, bags or rolls. Record the dimensions you used and keep net geometry separate from the purchase allowance so the result can be checked later.
