💡Tip:

Pattern repeat and match type can have a greater effect on waste than room area alone.

How the Wallpaper Calculator works

The wallpaper calculator estimates roll count from net wall area and the usable coverage you enter for one roll. Usable coverage matters more than nominal roll area when a pattern repeat forces strips to be cut to matching positions.

Formula

Wall area = perimeter × height − openings. Rolls = wall area × waste factor ÷ usable coverage per roll.

Measure before you buy

Measure the total perimeter of the walls being papered and the finished wall height. Estimate large openings as square footage if you want to subtract them. For accent walls, calculate only that wall. When the wallpaper has a large pattern repeat, use the manufacturer coverage guidance rather than theoretical roll area.

  • Pattern repeat and match type can have a greater effect on waste than room area alone.
  • Order all rolls from the same dye lot when possible.
  • Keep labels until the project is complete so unopened rolls can be identified or returned according to store policy.

Common questions

Why is usable roll coverage lower than roll area?

Pattern matching and strip length can create offcuts that cannot be used on the next drop.

Should I subtract windows?

Large openings can be subtracted, but leaving small openings in the calculation creates useful waste allowance.

How much extra wallpaper should I buy?

The correct allowance depends heavily on pattern repeat. Fifteen percent is only a starting point.

What is a dye lot?

Wallpaper made in different production batches can have slight color variation, so matching lot numbers is preferable.

Can I calculate one accent wall?

Yes. Enter that wall width as room length, set room width to zero only if your browser accepts it, or calculate area manually and adapt coverage; a dedicated single-wall version can also be added later.

Worked example: Wallpaper Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Room length (ft) = 14, Room width (ft) = 12, Wall height (ft) = 8, Doors/windows area (sq ft) = 60, Usable coverage per roll (sq ft) = 27 — the result is 16 rolls. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Wall area: 356 sq ft; With pattern/waste: 409.4 sq ft. Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this wallpaper calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are room length, room width and wall height. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.
