How the Caulk Calculator works

Caulk usage depends much more on bead cross-section than many people expect. Doubling the bead width or depth can roughly double the required volume. This calculator models the joint as a rectangular cross-section and converts the resulting volume into standard caulk tubes.

Formula

Sealant volume = joint length × bead width × bead depth. Tube volume converts fluid ounces to cubic inches. Tubes = required volume ÷ tube volume × waste factor.

Measure before you buy

Measure the combined length of the joints being sealed. Estimate average width and intended sealant depth rather than the full depth of a large cavity. For exterior expansion joints, backer rod and manufacturer width-to-depth recommendations may be important.

  • Use product instructions for maximum joint width and recommended depth.
  • Backer rod can reduce sealant volume and improve joint geometry.
  • Keep separate totals for different sealant products or colors.

Common questions

How many feet does one tube of caulk cover?

Coverage depends on bead width and depth. A thin bead can cover far more linear feet than a large joint.

Why does bead depth matter?

Caulk is a volume calculation; deeper joints consume more material.

Does this work for 10.1-ounce tubes?

Yes. The default is 10.1 fl oz, and the tube size can be changed.

Should I add waste?

Yes. Start/stop losses, tooling and irregular joints commonly use extra sealant.

Can I calculate silicone or polyurethane sealant?
