How the Tongue and Groove Calculator works

Tongue-and-groove products are often sold by board length while the project is measured in square feet. The conversion depends on effective face width after installation, which is usually narrower than nominal board width. This calculator connects those two quantities.

Formula

Board coverage = effective width × board length. Boards = project area × waste factor ÷ board coverage.

Measure before you buy

Measure the wall or ceiling area being covered. Then check the product specification for effective coverage width and available board length. If the room length creates many short offcuts or boards must be end-matched in a specific pattern, increase the waste allowance.

  • Use installed face width, not nominal board width.
  • Board direction affects cut waste and usable offcuts.
  • Trim, furring, fasteners and finish are not included in the board count.
