Project details

Enter your measurements and material details.

Planning estimate only. Verify product specifications and project requirements before ordering.
💡Tip:

Long narrow rooms and diagonal layouts can create more plank waste than simple rectangles.

How the Laminate Flooring Calculator works

Room area is multiplied by the selected waste factor, then divided by the square footage printed on one laminate carton. The final box count is rounded up because flooring is purchased in full cartons.

Formula

Boxes = room area × waste factor ÷ box coverage, rounded up.

Measure before you buy

Measure each connected floor area and include closets. Subtract only permanent areas that will not receive flooring. Use the exact carton coverage because plank dimensions and pieces per box vary by product.

  • Buy all visible flooring from a compatible production run when possible.
  • Keep spare planks for future repairs.
  • Underlayment and transition strips are separate quantities.

Common questions

How much extra laminate should I buy?

Around 5–10% is common for straightforward layouts, with more for diagonal or complex rooms.

Do I round boxes up?

Yes. The calculator rounds to full cartons.

Should I subtract kitchen cabinets?

Subtract fixed areas only if flooring will not run beneath them.

Does carton coverage vary?

Yes. Enter the exact square footage printed on the product carton.

Does this include underlayment?

No. Underlayment should be estimated separately.

Worked example: Laminate Flooring Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Room length (ft) = 14, Room width (ft) = 12, Waste allowance (%) = 10, Coverage per box (sq ft) = 20.5 — the result is 10 boxes. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Area with waste: 184.8 sq ft; Net floor area: 168 sq ft. Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this laminate flooring calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are room length, room width and waste allowance. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.

Planning estimate, not a design specification

Laminate Flooring Calculator is intended to help with quantity planning and arithmetic. It does not inspect the site, choose structural dimensions, determine code compliance or replace manufacturer installation instructions. Conditions such as slope, substrate quality, moisture, soil, framing, access and workmanship can change the final amount required.
