💡Tip:

Actual carpet orders depend on roll width, pile direction and seam layout, not area alone.

How the Carpet Calculator works

The calculator finds rectangular floor area, adds the selected allowance and converts square feet to square yards. It is best used as an early area check before an installer lays out full roll widths and seams.

Formula

Carpet area = length × width × waste factor. Square yards = square feet ÷ 9.

Measure before you buy

Measure the widest length and width of the carpeted space and include closets that will use the same material. For multiple rooms, calculate each area and add them before comparing with an installer layout.

  • Standard roll widths can create more waste than an area-only estimate.
  • Patterned carpet may require additional matching allowance.
  • Padding is normally estimated from the same net floor area.

Common questions

How many square yards are in 100 square feet?

About 11.11 square yards.

Why can an installer quote more carpet than my square footage?

Roll width, seams, pattern direction and room shape can require extra material.

Should closets be included?

Yes if they will receive the same carpet.

Does this calculate padding?

The area can be used for padding, but package coverage should be checked separately.

Can I use this for stairs?

Use the stair carpet calculator for repeated tread and riser dimensions.

Worked example: Carpet Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Room length (ft) = 15, Room width (ft) = 12, Extra allowance (%) = 10 — the result is 198 sq ft. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Net floor area: 180 sq ft; Square yards: 22 yd². Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this carpet calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are room length, room width and extra allowance. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.

Planning estimate, not a design specification

Carpet Calculator is intended to help with quantity planning and arithmetic. It does not inspect the site, choose structural dimensions, determine code compliance or replace manufacturer installation instructions. Conditions such as slope, substrate quality, moisture, soil, framing, access and workmanship can change the final amount required.
