Fastener spacing depends on framing, sheet orientation and applicable installation requirements.

How the Drywall Screw Calculator works

This calculator multiplies the drywall sheet count by an editable screws-per-sheet rate, adds extra fasteners and then converts the result to full boxes using the box quantity you enter.

Formula

Screws = sheets × screws per sheet × waste factor. Boxes = screws ÷ screws per box, rounded up.

Measure before you buy

Start with the sheet count from a drywall takeoff. The default screws-per-sheet value is only a planning rate; ceiling sheets, framing spacing and local requirements can change the actual fastener count.

  • Use the fastener length specified for the drywall thickness and framing.
  • Ceilings may use different fastening patterns than walls.
  • Keep extra compatible screws for repairs and damaged fasteners.

Common questions

How many screws per drywall sheet?

There is no universal count; spacing and framing layout determine it. The calculator rate is editable.

Does this work for ceilings?

Yes as a planning estimate, but ceiling fastening patterns can be denser.

How many boxes should I buy?

Enter the screws per box and the calculator rounds the estimated total up to full boxes.

Can I use drywall nails instead?

This tool estimates screw quantity only; nail schedules and requirements differ.

Does it size screw length?

No. Screw type and length depend on board thickness and framing.

Worked example: Drywall Screw Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Drywall sheets = 30, Screws per sheet = 32, Extra allowance (%) = 10, Screws per box = 1000 — the result is 1,056 screws. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Approx. boxes: 2; Rate used: 32 / sheet. Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this drywall screw calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are drywall sheets, screws per sheet and extra allowance. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.

Planning estimate, not a design specification

Drywall Screw Calculator is intended to help with quantity planning and arithmetic. It does not inspect the site, choose structural dimensions, determine code compliance or replace manufacturer installation instructions. Conditions such as slope, substrate quality, moisture, soil, framing, access and workmanship can change the final amount required.
