💡Tip:

Trowel notch size and substrate flatness can change actual adhesive coverage.

How the Tile Adhesive Calculator works

The calculator uses the square footage being tiled and the manufacturer’s estimated coverage for one bag at the trowel size you plan to use. It adds a small allowance and rounds the result to full bags.

Formula

Adhesive bags = tile area × waste factor ÷ coverage per bag, rounded up.

Measure before you buy

Measure the surface receiving tile and use the coverage chart for the specific mortar or adhesive. Larger tile often requires a larger notch and more material per square foot.

  • Back-buttering large-format tile can increase mortar use.
  • Uneven substrates should be corrected rather than relying on extra mortar alone.
  • Open time, pot life and substrate requirements come from the product instructions.

Common questions

How much thinset do I need for 100 square feet?

It depends on trowel size and product. Enter the bag coverage shown for your application.

Does tile size matter?

Yes. Larger tile generally uses a larger notch and can reduce coverage per bag.

Should I include waste?

A modest allowance helps account for material left in the bucket and on tools.

Can I use this for premixed adhesive?

Yes if you enter the container coverage in square feet.

Does it calculate grout too?

No. Use the grout calculator separately.

Worked example: Tile Adhesive Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Tile area (sq ft) = 200, Coverage per bag (sq ft) = 60, Extra allowance (%) = 10 — the result is 4 bags. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Project area: 200 sq ft; Coverage used: 60 sq ft/bag. Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this tile adhesive calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are tile area, coverage per bag and extra allowance. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.

Planning estimate, not a design specification

Tile Adhesive Calculator is intended to help with quantity planning and arithmetic. It does not inspect the site, choose structural dimensions, determine code compliance or replace manufacturer installation instructions. Conditions such as slope, substrate quality, moisture, soil, framing, access and workmanship can change the final amount required.
