How the Sod Calculator works

The sod calculator turns lawn dimensions into square footage, adds a trimming allowance and converts the result into rolls or pieces using the coverage supplied by your seller. Sod sizes vary substantially by farm and region, so the coverage field should be updated before ordering.

Formula

Lawn area = length × width. Purchase area = lawn area × (1 + waste %). Pieces = purchase area ÷ coverage per roll or piece.

Measure before you buy

Measure only the areas that will receive sod and subtract permanent beds, patios and other hardscape when they are large. For curved yards, divide the lawn into rectangles and triangles or measure slightly generously rather than risking a short order during installation.

  • Confirm roll or slab dimensions with the supplier before ordering.
  • Sod is perishable, so schedule delivery close to installation time.
  • Irregular edges, trees and curved beds usually increase cutting waste.

Common questions

How much extra sod should I order?

About 5–10% is common for ordinary layouts, with more for curved or complex yards.

Are all sod rolls the same size?

No. Coverage varies by producer, which is why the calculator lets you enter square feet per roll or piece.

Should I subtract flower beds?

Yes, for meaningful areas that will not receive sod.

Can this calculate multiple lawn sections?

Calculate each section and add the purchase square footage, or use combined length and width only when the shape is truly rectangular.

Why not order the exact lawn area?

Trimming, damaged pieces and irregular boundaries create unavoidable waste.

Worked example: Sod Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Lawn length (ft) = 45, Lawn width (ft) = 30, Waste allowance (%) = 7, Coverage per roll/piece (sq ft) = 10 — the result is 1,444.5 sq ft. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Net lawn area: 1,350 sq ft; Rolls/pieces: 145. Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this sod calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are lawn length, lawn width and waste allowance. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.
