Planning estimate only. Verify product specifications and project requirements before ordering.
💡Tip:

Starter strips, ridge caps and specialty shingles may not be included in the field-shingle bundle count.

How the Shingle Calculator works

Roof area is increased by the selected waste allowance and divided by 100 to get roofing squares. Squares are then multiplied by the bundles-per-square value for the selected shingle product.

Formula

Squares = roof area × waste factor ÷ 100. Bundles = squares × bundles per square, rounded up.

Measure before you buy

Enter actual sloped roof surface area, not the building footprint. Use the roofing calculator first if you only know footprint and pitch factor. Replace the default bundles-per-square value with product packaging information.

  • Three bundles per square is common but not universal.
  • Valleys, hips, dormers and complex cuts can require more waste.
  • Ridge cap and starter products should be estimated separately.

Common questions

How many square feet are in one roofing square?

One roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface.

How many bundles make a square?

Often three, but some shingle products use a different number.

Should roof area include waste already?

Enter net roof area and let the waste field add allowance, or set waste to zero if your area already includes it.

Does this include ridge caps?

No. Specialty ridge and starter materials are separate.

Can I use building footprint as roof area?

Not directly. Slope increases actual roof surface area.

Worked example: Shingle Calculator

Using the example inputs shown in the calculator — Roof area (sq ft) = 2000, Waste allowance (%) = 12, Bundles per square = 3 — the result is 22.4 squares. This demonstrates the formula with a complete set of numbers rather than a hidden assumption.

The result breakdown also shows Area with waste: 2,240 sq ft; Bundles: 68. Replace the example values with field measurements and the exact product coverage, yield or package size you plan to buy.

For this shingle calculator, the inputs with the greatest practical effect are roof area, waste allowance and bundles per square. Recalculate when any of those change; do not reuse a result from a different room, run, layer depth or product specification.

Planning estimate, not a design specification

Shingle Calculator is intended to help with quantity planning and arithmetic. It does not inspect the site, choose structural dimensions, determine code compliance or replace manufacturer installation instructions. Conditions such as slope, substrate quality, moisture, soil, framing, access and workmanship can change the final amount required.
